“We need space. We need it around us and within us. ”
From my ebook Solitude Guide Yellowstone National Park
I am an endlessly curious person who loves exploring this amazing world and telling others about it through my work as a writer and video producer. I have a lifelong interest in nature – the nature that surrounds us and the nature of who we are. To me, they are deeply intertwined.
I’m currently working on a series of ebooks about finding solitude in the natural world, particularly our most spectacular landscapes, the national parks. Many parks are so crowded that it is hard to feel their magnificence, hard to fathom their beauty. It’s hard to hear the quiet wisdom that comes from nature and from our deepest selves. The first ebook on Yellowstone will be out in late February!
I spend a lot of time in the national parks and have written the visitor center films for Rocky Mountain National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Earlier in my career, I was a TV reporter in local news before going to CNN and TBS to cover environmental issues and solutions — especially solutions!
I have been honored with three regional Emmy Awards for writing and producing. One was for a documentary on KUSA-TV in Denver called Promises in the Mist. It’s the story of the people who carry on Dian Fossey’s work protecting and studying the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Looking into the eyes of a gorilla is one of the most profound experiences I’ve ever had.
Another Emmy came for writing a documentary called The Colorado: Lifeblood of the West. I traveled from the headwaters to Mexico to meet the people and see the places that define this legendary river. The story aired on CNN, TBS and KUSA. I am still moved when I see a drop of melting snow in Rocky Mountain National Park, knowing it will grow into a river that supports human and non-human life in six states and Mexico, knowing it will go on to sculpt one of the Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon. What a wondrous journey it has ahead!
My work has also been seen on cable channels including the Travel Channel, Outdoor Life Network, HGTV, VH1 and CNBC. My print work has appeared in High Country News and Colorado Outdoors Magazine. Examples are on my website, Wild Mare Productions.
I’ve spent most of my life in the West, growing up in Arizona and Colorado (where I live now) with a little dash of New Mexico and Texas thrown in. My love for the nature and culture of this region led me to the University of New Mexico where I earned a Master of Arts in American Studies, focusing on environment, science and technology in American culture. Graduate school helped inspire my part-time career teaching TV journalism, which I do at my alma mater, the University of Colorado in Boulder.
I hope my work inspires thought, conversation and ultimately plays some part in a coming revolution that changes the human relationship with the natural world. May we may respect and honor all beings and recognize their equal right to thrive in this world. As Sigourney Weaver put it in my documentary, Promises in the Mist, “It is their planet too”.
My best, Pattie Logan
Our national parks can be so crowded that it ruins the experience. I’ve started a series of ebooks to address this problem for those who are motivated to find tranquility and connect with nature. The first is Solitude Guide Yellowstone National Park: How to Avoid Crowds and Connect with Nature. It’s available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Apple iTunes (and iBookstore on your iPad or iPhone).
